Five countries in V8 Supercars expansion talks

V8 Supercars hopes to have three events offshore in 2015

V8 Supercars hopes to have three events offshore in 2015

V8 Supercars has revealed that is it currently in talks with five possible new international destinations as it looks to add three overseas events to its 2015 calendar.

One of the international races will be the already confirmed return to the Circuit of the Americas, with which the category hopes to ‘twin’ a second USA event.

As previously reported, Warburton and V8 Supercars chief operating officer Shane Howard visited the USA last month, where they were introduced to several circuit owners through contacts of Roger Penske.

Stressing that the sustainability of any future global expansion must be thoroughly investigated, Warburton suggested that a second USA could be solidified by mid-year.

Warburton would not be drawn, however, on any details regarding possible future events outside the USA.

“We have four years left on that (Texas) contract and that is a contract that we will honour,” he said.

“In addition to that we went to America as has been reported we met with a lot of people.

“The economic benefit of a twin (race) is something we are investigating.

“In addition to that there are five other countries we are talking to about extending our international coverage.

“The only caveat I want to put on international is if we need more time then we’ll take it.

“But we’ve got to get them all right and make sure they are sustainable as long term events.

“We will be in a position be about the middle of the year to give a clear indication of what our international plans are.”

Previous international V8 Supercars sojourns to China, Bahrain and Yas Marina have all failed to see their full contract terms.
