Sophia Flörsch has sustained a spinal fracture and is due to undergo surgery after surviving a frightening crash at the Macau Grand Prix.
An out of control Flörsch slid backwards over the kerbs at speed before making contact with Sho Tsuboi, which lifted the car into the air and over the catch fencing.
The car then came to rest in a marshal area with the incident bringing out the red flags.
Flörsch’s Van Amersfoort Racing team issued a statement that confirmed the driver was conscious and in a stable condition.
A further medical report diagnosed the teenager with a spinal fracture.
Flörsch has since posted a message on Twitter.
“I am fine but will be going into surgery tomorrow (Monday) morning,” read the social media post.
“Thanks to everybody for the supporting messages. Update soon.”
Tsuboi, two photographers and a marshal were also taken to hospital.
Photographer Minami Hiroyuki suffered a concussion while fellow media representative Chang Weng Wang has a liver laceration
Marshal Chan Cha In sustained a fractured facial bone and lacerations.
Meanwhile, Tsuboi had complained of back pain.
