Foster wins, Richards edges closer to title

Steven Richards has edged closer to the Carrera Cup title despite missing out on victory

Steven Richards moved a step closer to claiming his maiden Porsche Carrera Cup Australia crown despite losing a race win to Nick Foster on the final lap at the Castrol Edge Gold Coast 600.

Richards made the most of a strong getaway to jump ahead of polesitter David Russell on the run down to the first corner, while title contender Warren Luff was pitched into a spin after contact from Sam Power.

The 2013 Bathurst 1000 winner was pushed hard, first by Russell and then by Foster in the closing laps.

However, a last gasp dive from Foster on the final lap saw Richards surrender the lead and settle for second place.

The victory was Foster’s maiden triumph.

Contact with the wall contributed to Russell’s demise towards the end of the race as he finished fourth behind Shae Davies, who competed the podium.

The second place finish has moved Richards into a 29 point lead over Luff in the title race which is set to be concluded in the final race of the season this afternoon.

In the end Richards trailed Foster by just 0.0880s with Davies coming home in third, ahead of Russell and Craig Baird.

Luff kept the title alive by crossing the finish line in eighth while Baird remains in the hunt just 46 points adrift with 60 to play for.

Tony Bates won the Elite Class battle in ninth overall.
