V8 Supercars has cancelled further Navy helicopter displays at the Sydney Motorsport Park Super Sprint following today’s incident that injured James Courtney.

Courtney is in Westmead Hospital with two fractured ribs and a punctured lung after being hit by pit equipment disturbed by the downdraft of a Navy helicopter.

The Seahawk helicopter had been undertaking a demonstration over the circuit prior to the start of the second V8 Supercars practice session of the day.

“Our thoughts are with James and we wish him a speedy and full recovery,” read a V8 Supercars statement released this evening.

“As a result of today’s incident we have cancelled plans for further helicopter displays over the weekend.”

V8 Supercars CEO James Warburton stressed the championship’s strong relationship with the military during a television interview earlier in the afternoon.

“Obviously we put on a lot of these types of displays,” said Warburton

“We trust in the military and I just think it’s one of those unfortunate things.

“We will launch our own investigation. I know the Navy are launching their own investigation and obviously we’ll go from there.”
