Daniel Gaunt is set to drive a Kelly Racing Commodore during the endurance driver co-driver sessions at Phillip Island this Friday.
The New Zealand Carrera Cup driver is poised to drive one of Kelly Racing’s four cars during the two practice sessions, dedicated to V8 endurance drivers.
Gaunt’s Friday test opportunity puts him in the frame to score a seat with the team in its yet-to-be-announced Sandown and Bathurst line-up.
While Kelly Racing has not revealed its co-driver line-up yet, it is believed that Owen Kelly, Tim Blanchard and David Russell will suit up for the Victorian-based squad.
Reigning Formula Ford champion and V8 Development Series rookie Cameron Waters has also been touted as a possible endurance driver.
Kelly Racing, which is set to be transformed into Nissan Motorsport in 2013, campaigns four cars for regular drivers Todd and Rick Kelly (Jack Daniel’s Racing), Greg Murphy (Pepsi Max Crew) and Karl Reindler (Fair Dinkum Sheds Racing).
Team driver and co-owner Rick Kelly confirmed that his team is close to announcing its co-drivers.
“We will be finalising our endurance drivers soon,”Kelly told Speedcafe.com.
“There are still a few details to sort before I start to speak about what we’re doing, but we’re pretty comfortable with the selection of people we have on offer.”
Gaunt’s Friday seat time will give him double duties ahead of the race weekend, adding to his duties in the Wilson Security-backed Porsche Carrera Cup car. He currently sits fourth in the one-make series.
The V8 Supercars hit the track for the first time on Friday at Phillip Island.
