Toyota 86 Racing Series driver Ben Grice has been discharged from hospital following a heavy crash in Race 1 at the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000.

As the field streamed out of Griffins Bend on the opening lap, Grice was unloaded in the middle of the pack and slammed into the right-hand concrete wall.

It caused significant damage to the 28-year old’s car, with Grice taken to the Mount Panorama Circuit medical centre after being extracted from the car.

He was then transferred to Orange Hospital for precautionary checks.

On Saturday evening, Grice posted an update on social media confirming that he escaped with no broken bones.

“I’m okay,” read a post on his Facebook page.

“Just been discharged from Orange Hospital after precautionary scans. Nothing broken, but flared up my existing disc injury in my back.

“Unfortunately it’s not the same story for the car, she is stuffed. I’m absolutely gutted for my team. What we do from here I’m not sure.

“The accident was stupid. Lap 1 heading into The Cutting. I was hooked by another car firing me hard, head on into the fence and then back in the path of the field and got cleaned up.

“Thanks for all the messages of support.”

Officials subsequently red flagged proceedings after the crash which left several cars damaged, ultimately abandoning the race.

The final Toyota 86 Racing Series race of the weekend is set to begin on Sunday at 0730 AEDT.
