Hamilton edges Alonso in Singapore practice

Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton once again proved to be the man to beat as he topped the times in Friday free practice for the Singapore Grand Prix.

The British driver enjoyed a strong run in both 90 minute sessions setting a personal best of 1.47.490s on super soft rubber in the second hit out.

The effort proved to be just over a tenth quicker than nearest rival Fernando Alonso.

Ferrari produced one of their best starts to a grand prix weekend this season with both Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen posting impressive times.

Alonso, who topped the opening free practice session, was just 0.133s adrift of Hamilton, while Red Bull Racing’s Daniel Ricciardo was third, just two tenths quicker than the sister Ferrari of Raikkonen.

A power unit problem at the end of opening practice threatened to curtail the reigning world champion’s day before the German made an appearance in the final minutes of the Free Practice 2.

Vettel ended the day half a second off the pace in fifth spot having completed just five flying laps.

The McLarens of Kevin Magnussen and Jenson Button were sixth and seventh ahead of the Force India duo of Sergio Perez and Nico Hulkenberg.

Meanwhile, title rival Nico Rosberg could only set a time good enough for 13th position on soft tyres as his simulation run was disrupted by a red flag midway through the session caused by Lotus‘ Pastor Maldonado.

The Venezuelan lost control of his E22 before ploughing into the barriers at Turn 10.

Williams appeared to struggle to adapt to the tricky Marina Bay street circuit with drivers Felipe Massa and Valtteri Bottas 17th and 18th fastest respectively.
