Todd Hazelwood has laid down an impressive lap time to take the Armor All Pole Position for the second Dunlop Super2 Series race on the streets of Townsville.

The Race 1 winner will start alongside series leader Paul Dumbrell for this afternoon’s 21-lapper after topping qualifying by 0.2s.

Hazelwood had sat third after the first runs before coming out and setting a 1:14.1659s.

The lap was nearly 0.6s faster than the previous Super2 best of the weekend, set by Jack Le Brocq during Friday practice, in an electric session.

“It’s been a great weekend so far and to get this pole position, first one of my season and second one of my career, I can’t thank the Matt Stone Racing boys enough,” said Hazelwood.

The South Australian native was on track to go faster again in the dying moments before an error at Turn 7 pitched the #35 Bigmate Commodore through the grass.

Dumbrell (#88 Burson Auto Parts Eggleston Motorsport Commodore) improved from fifth to second in the final minute of the quarter-hour session, bumping Anton de Pasquale (#67 ToolPro Paul Morris Motorsport Falcon) onto the second row alongside Garry Jacobson (#1 Mega Prodrive Racing Australia Falcon).

Jack LeBrocq (#28 GoGetta MW Motorsport Altima), Macauley Jones (#14 DrillPro Brad Jones Racing Commodore), Bryce Fullwood (#16 Middy’s MW Motorsport Altima), and Race 1 pole-sitter Shae Davies (#26 Loco MW Motorsport Altima) round out the top 10.

Jack Perkins (#4 Titan Tray Dragon Motor Racing Commodore) qualified 12th but was compromised on the second flyer of his second run when he came up on the back of Kurt Kostecki, hitting the #55 Arcoplate Kostecki Brothers Commodore in the rear at the apex of Turn 13.

The incident will be subject to a post-session investigation.

Jack Smith (#21 SCT Logistics Brad Jones Racing Commodore) qualified 17th fastest but will be put back to 22nd as punishment for cleaning up Brodie Kostecki (#57 Sprint Cutting Matt Stone Racing Falcon) during qualifying the day prior.

Race 2 starts at 1450 local time /AEST.
