Hendrick Motorsport will hand teenager William Byron his NASCAR Cup Series debut next season as the youngster steps up from the Xfinity Series.

Byron made his NASCAR debut in 2016, driving in the Truck Series, where he won seven times in his rookie season.

He then progressed to the Xfinity Series where he’s already logged three victories at Iowa, Daytona and Indianapolis.

Hendrick Motorsport signed Byron in mid-2016, and next year will join its roster of Cup Series drivers alongside Chase Elliot, Jimmie Johnson and Alex Bowman.

The 19-year-old will replace 18-time NASCAR Cup Series race winner Kasey Kahne.

“At every step, William has proven how quickly he can adapt,” said Rick Hendrick, owner of Hendrick Motorsports.

“Some drivers have raw talent and some have a strong work ethic. William has both.

“It’s impressive to see a young guy who never gets rattled and instinctively knows how to communicate with his team.”

“It hasn’t sunk in yet,” added Byron, who will turn 20 before he makes his Cup Series debut at Daytona next year.

“The people at Hendrick Motorsports have dedicated their lives to giving their drivers the best chance to win every weekend.

“I have a responsibility to them to work hard and put everything I have into this opportunity.”
