Jorge Lorenzo clocked the fastest lap of the San Marino Grand Prix weekend in qualifying to claim pole position for Sunday’s race.

The factory Yamaha rider led the qualifying session from the outset before lowering his benchmark with a 1:32.146s to secure the all important pole at the Misano circuit.

Honda’s Marc Marquez emerged as Lorenzo’s nearest rival with the reigning world champion just 0.106s shy of this year’s championship contender.

Championship leader Valentino Rossi was made to work hard throughout qualifying with the nine-time world champion snatching the final place on the front in the latter stages of the session.

Dani Pedrosa held second spot for much of the session before he was eclipsed by both Marquez and Rossi, leaving the Honda rider to head up the second row in fourth.

Michele Pirro proved to be the fastest of the factory Ducatis in fifth ahead of the Tech 3 Yamaha of Bradley Smith.

Andrea Iannone was seventh while Andrea Dovizioso, Danilo Petrucci and Suzuki’s Aleix Espargaro completed the top 10.

Australia’s Jack Miller will start Sunday’s race from 17th on the grid aboard the Open class LCR Honda.
