Top Fuel star Phil Lamattina has been hospitalised following a severe crash in qualifying at the Fuchs Winternationals.

The 39-year-old from Mildura, who topped the times in the Top Fuel category on Friday, suffered a chassis failure which resulted in a sizeable accident.

Lamattina was conscious following the incident at Willowbank Raceway, but has been transferred to a nearby hospital, where he will undergo scans having complained of “serious” back pain.

Lamattina completed the run in his brand new top fuel dragster before it shot into the air with the chassis breaking in two.

“My brother Phil has been involved in an accident, all we know at this time is that he is alive and well with some serious back pain,” said Lamattina Top Fuel Racing Team Co-Owner Angelo Lamattina.

“He has been taken to the hospital for further scans to find out what is causing the pain. He was talking to medical personnel at the time.”

UPDATE: A further statement issued by the family has confirmed Lamattina has suffered a shattered vertebrae but is expected to make a full recovery.

“The Lamattina family would like to advise that Phil is currently in hospital after suffering a shattered vertebrae in today’s racing incident,” read the statement.

“Surgeons have advised that a full recovery is expected and the team will keep everyone up to date with his progress over the coming days. The family thanks all for the well wishes and support.”
