Local wins ASBK round at Wakefield Park

Troy Herfoss has won a race and ASBK Round 2 at his home track of Wakefield Park while Troy Bayliss finished sixth and fifth in the two races.

Wayne Maxwell (Yamaha) claimed Race 1 when he dragged past Herfoss (Honda) on the final run down the main straight, the pair having traded places during the encounter.

They and Josh Waters (Suzuki) had broken away from the field early in the piece, though Waters ended up finishing a fairly distant third.

Bayliss (Ducati) made up two places at the start and got by Daniel Falzon for fourth on Lap 7, holding out the Yamaha rider for some time.

However, an error on Lap 17 of 20 gave the position back to Falzon and pre-round championship leader Bryan Staring (Kawasaki) followed.

Race 2 again began with a three-way battle between Herfoss, Maxwell, and Waters.

Maxwell beat pole-sitter Herfoss off the line and led for the first 11 laps before the Goulburn rider made his move and checked out.

Behind Maxwell, Waters and Falzon repeated their Race 1 results, the latter having got by Bayliss on Lap 3 this time around.

Herfoss has taken over the championship lead while Staring’s title hopes were dented when he failed to finish Race 2.

Round 3 takes the YMI Australian Superbike Championship to The Bend Motorsport Park on April 19-22.
