Joey Logano has reclaimed the lead of the NASCAR Cup Series with a thrilling overtime victory at Michigan International Speedway.
Logano held the lead for the majority of the 400-mile race, which was postponed a day due to rain, becoming embroiled in a strategy battle with Kurt Busch and Martin Truex Jnr inside the final 30 laps.
The trio opted for two tyres during their respective final pit stops while Kyle Larson and Kevin Harvick, who were also vying for victory, lost track position by taking four tyres.
Logano regained the lead when the cycle completed, but with Kurt Busch and Truex Jnr honing in on the #22 Team Penske Ford before Erik Jones’ spin into the Turn 2 infield caused a Caution which sent the race to overtime.
Positioned on the outside for the restart, Logano got the better jump over Truex Jnr and then staved off Kyle Busch on the final lap to claim a second win of the season, by 0.147s.
Truex Jnr was ultimately third, ahead of Daniel Suarez and previous series leader Kyle Busch.
The series heads to Sonoma for the first of the season’s three road course races on June 21-23.
