Jorge Lorenzo made the most of tricky wet conditions to win a dramatic rain affected Grand Prix of Aragon.
The Yamaha rider was in contention for the victory throughout the contest having been involved in a race long battle with Honda duo Marc Marquez and Dani Pedrosa.
Having started in dry conditions, a late rain shower played havoc with the riders. Lorenzo chose to make the switch to his wet weather bike with just a handful of laps of remaining.
The leading Honda pair decided against pitting which proved to be their downfall as both Pedrosa and Marquez fell in the closing stages gifting Lorenzo the victory.
Aleix Espargaro capitalised on the conditions to fend off Ducati’s Cal Crutchlow for his first podium in second spot.
Championship leader Marquez managed to remount his machine to come home in 13th position.
Valentino Rossi suffered a nasty fall earlier in the race which saw him taken to medical centre. Having received an all clear from MotoGP doctors, he was transferred to Alcaniz Hospital for a precautionary CT scan.
It was Pedrosa who made the best start as he led the field heading into Turn 1 but he soon lost the position to Pramac Ducati’s Andrea Iannone.
Marquez briefly held third before he charged up to second at the end of the opening lap with Lorenzo jumping from seventh to third.
The following lap saw Marquez take the lead from Iannone, who then ran wide seconds later and lost control of his bike.
This promoted Rossi into fourth position as the nine-time world champion latched himself onto the back of the lead trio.
However, his podium hopes soon went up in smoke as he dropped his bike in a nasty accident. Rossi was immediately taken to a medical centre for a check up after making contact with his out of control Yamaha during the crash.
At the front Marquez began to open up a healthy lead from Lorenzo and Pedrosa as the clouds gathered above.
The threat of rain soon turned into precipitation but it didn’t stop the trio from taking turns in the lead as the battle for the win intensified.
With 11 laps remaining, Race Direction deemed the conditions slippery enough to offer riders the option to switch to wet weather machines.
A handful of riders chose to come in while the Marquez, Pedrosa and Lorenzo initially ignored the pits.
The rain continued to fall with Lorenzo the first of the lead group to crack and change to his wet weather bike.
It proved to be an inspired decision as Pedrosa fell from second spot on the pit straight moments later.
Leader Marquez was next to be caught out by the conditions. The reigning world champion ignored the lure of the pits and managed to hold on for two laps longer than his team-mate, before he fell after encountering a wet patch.
Marquez’s slip handed Lorenzo the lead which he turned into victory from Aleix Espargaro and a hard charging Crutchlow.
LCR Honda’s Stefan Bradl finished in fourth ahead of Monster Yamaha’s Bradley Smith and Pol Espargaro.
Marquez recovered to finish in 13th position with Pedrosa in 14th, while Australia’s Broc Parkes came home in 18th place.
