Lorenzo defeats Marquez in Silverstone thriller

Jorge Lorenzo

Jorge Lorenzo

Jorge Lorenzo returned to the top of the podium at the British Grand Prix after coming out on top in a sensational race-long battle with Marc Marquez.

Having dislocated his shoulder in a morning warm-up crash, Marquez defied expectations by proving able to cling onto the rear wheel of Lorenzo’s fast starting Yamaha throughout the opening stages.

Marquez remained tucked in behind his rival until scything down the inside at Brooklands with little over two laps remaining.

Lorenzo was able to return the favour at Vale on the penultimate tour and appeared to have the race won before another dive at Brooklands swung the pendulum in Marquez’s favour once more.

The battle was not over, however, as Marquez slipped just wide enough at the final turn to allow Lorenzo back through.

The victory is Lorenzo’s third in four years at Silverstone and breaks a four-race winning streak from points leader Marquez.

Dani Pedrosa finished third on the second of the Repsol Hondas having stalked the two protagonists for much of the race.

Valentino Rossi came out on top in his own intense last lap battle with Alvaro Bautista for fourth, while Stefan Bradl, Cal Crutchlow, Nicky Hayden, Bradley Smith and Aleix Espargaro completed the top 10.

Hayden’s Ducati team-mate Andrea Dovizioso had sat eighth heading into the final laps before a mistake ended his race.

Starting third on the grid, Crutchlow had proven unable to thrill his home fans after a large crash of his own in the warm-up.
