Craig Lowndes has been voted the ABC Sport Personality of the Year at the AIS Sport Performance Awards in Sydney.
The prize arrives after a standout final full-time season in Supercars that saw the fan favourite win this year’s Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 for a seventh time.
Lowndes capped a stellar campaign by winning the Pirtek Enduro Cup alongside co-driver Steven Richards on his way to fourth in the championship standings.
Almost 20,000 Australians voted on the award with Lowndes coming out on top, seeing off 14 finalists from a range of sports in the process.
The award is not the only prize Lowndes has claimed away from the race track this year after being announced an honorary citizen of Bathurst.
Last month saw Lowndes involved in an emotional farewell from full-time Supercars racing at the Coates Hire Newcastle 500.
He will however remain involved in the category as a co-driver for Triple Eight which he will complement with a role among the Fox Sports Supercars broadcast.
Lowndes also hopes to expand his racing exploits overseas with talks underway to secure a drive at the prestigious Le Mans 24 Hours.
The 44-year-old will return to Mount Panorama early next year when he tackles the Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 Hour (January 31-February 3) in a Triple Eight run Mercedes-AMG GT3.
