Marc Marquez returned to winning ways as he came through a tense duel with Jorge Lorenzo to win the British Grand Prix.
The Honda rider was pushed hard throughout the race by the former double world champion Lorenzo with the victory at Silverstone only decided in the final three laps.
Lorenzo led for the majority of the race before the pair swapped positions in the final 10 laps.
In the end, Marquez eventually broke his Yamaha shod opponent by producing a strong decisive move for the lead in the closing stages, which set up his 11th victory of the year.
Lorenzo settled for second in front of his teammate Valentino Rossi, who fought off Honda’s Dani Pedrosa and Ducati’s Andrea Dovizioso for third.
An impressive getaway saw Lorenzo storm into the lead at the start with polesitter Marquez following the Yamaha in second and Aleix Espargaro in third.
Andrea Dovizioso briefly held fourth before passing the Forward Yamaha of Espargaro before the end of the opening lap. He dropped back even further when Valentino Rossi surged through a lap later.
At the front, Lorenzo tried to shake off the Honda of Marquez but the reigning world champion refused to be dropped.
Dovizioso and Rossi soon became embroiled in battle for third with the seven time world champion eventually finding a way passed his fellow Italian.
Honda’s Dani Pedrosa was the next man to make a move as he quickly latched onto the back of the battle to third where he began to apply pressure on Dovizioso and Rossi.
The pressure eventually took its toll allowing the Spaniard the leapfrog into third.
Meanwhile just two seconds up the road, Marquez continued to shadow Lorenzo at the front as he waited to make a move on the leader.
The move came with just seven laps remaining as Marquez dived underneath Lorenzo for the lead at Stowe corner. Lorenzo responded at the next corner but was unable to reclaim the position.
Behind, the battle for the final podium place intensified as Rossi jumped Pedrosa for third, while an opportunistic Dovizioso moved into fourth.
All eyes were fixed on the battle for the lead as Lorenzo refused to give up on the race win as he piled the pressure on Marquez.
Lorenzo’s efforts were rewarded as he moved back into the lead after Marquez ran wide at Stowe.
Marquez responded by pursuing the Yamaha closely before launching another move to grab the lead at The Loop with just two laps left. The pass forced Lorenzo to sit up but crucially allowed Marquez to claim the lead.
In the end, Lorenzo was unable to respond again as Marquez came through to take the chequered flag for the 11th time this season.
Lorenzo was forced to settle for second while Rossi just held off Pedrosa and Dovizioso for third.
Monster Yamaha’s Pol Espargaro came home in sixth ahead of LCR Honda’s Stefan Bradl and Pramac Ducati’s Andrea Iannone.
Aleix Espargaro was ninth ahead of Scott Redding who completed the top 10 in front of his home crowd.
Australia’s Broc Parkes finished in 21st position for Paul Bird Motorsport.
