
Marc Marquez will start the Grand Prix of Aragon from pole position after denying Honda team-mate Dani Pedrosa in the closing stages of qualifying.
The championship leader signaled his intentions by breaking the lap record at the Spanish circuit with his first flying lap.
However, the reigning world champion was unable to relax as Honda compatriot Pedrosa snatched provisional pole in the dying seconds.
With the clock ticking, Marquez summoned another record breaking 1.47.187s effort to steal the all important pole position by three tenths of a second.
Pramac Ducati’s Andrea Iannone completed the front row in third with his late effort just half a second adrift of Marquez.
Monster Yamaha’s Pol Espargaro emerged in fourth spot just ahead of Ducati’s Cal Crutchlow.
It proved to be a difficult day fro the factory Yamaha squad with Misano winner Valentino Rossi only managing to secure sixth on the grid.
The Italian was more than a second off the pace with team-mate Jorge Lorenzo two hundredths adrift in seventh.
LCR Honda’s Stefan Bradl was eighth quickest ahead of Ducati’s Andrea Dovizioso, while Aleix Espargaro completed the top 10.
Australia’s Broc Parkes will line up in 22nd position on the grid for Paul Bird Motorsport.
In Moto3, Queenslander Jack Miller qualified fourth for Sunday’s race just 0.158s shy of polesitter Alex Rins.
The Townsville teenager holds a nine point lead at the top of the championship standings.
