Guy Martin is recovering in hospital after sustaining multiple fractures in a horrific crash at the Ulster Grand Prix in Northern Ireland.
The 33-year-old has undergone surgery at Belfast’s Royal Victoria Hospital after emerging from a frightening highside with a broken sternum, vertebra and fractured ribs.
Martin lost control of his Tyco BMW while leading the Dundrod 150 Superbike race at the famous road racing meeting.
The British rider, now ruled out of the showpiece Ulster Grand Prix race, was being chased by Kiwi road racing star Bruce Anstey at the time of the crash.
His Tyco BMW team initially thought Martin had escaped the incident unscathed before the full extent of his injuries were revealed.
The team expect Martin to be released from hospital within the next few days.
“Most importantly our thoughts are with Guy at this point in time, and although it is a real shame he will not be racing on Saturday,” said Tyco BMW boss Philip Neill.
“Thankfully he will recover from his injuries and be up on his feet in a few days. As a matter of fact he is already talking about work on Monday.”
