Former V8 Supercars team owner Jim Morton is set to make a return to the Touring Car Masters after purchasing Jim Hunter’s Holden Monaro.
The two-door HQ will be driven by current Queensland V8 Series pilot Michael Wedge, and make its first appearance under the Morton banner at the upcoming Queensland Raceway round in August.
Morton entered the TCM with Glenn Seton in a Ford Falcon XB last year, before that car was sold to fellow competitor Keith Kassulke.
While Morton has enjoyed a long association with Ford products, he says the purchase of the Monaro has seen his racing career come full circle.
“My first race car was an FJ Holden so in spite of having Fords for the last decade, it’s in a sense a return to the red side,” said Morton.
“The Monaro holds the Bathurst TCM lap record from when Jason Richards it in 2011, so we know it’s a great machine and a competitive package.”
Having previously housed the XB in Wedge’s workshop, Morton says he’s pleased to have the Queenslander in the drivers’ seat.
“I’ve been to some Queensland V8 events with him and was impressed by his driving, commitment and enthusiasm for the sport,” said Morton.
According to Wedge, the TCM will provide a strong opportunity to make the move into national-level motorsport.
“Jim is highly professional and doesn’t do things by halves,” said Wedge.
“I’m looking forward to developing alongside Jim and getting into the TCM challenge. It was a positive surprise to be asked to be involved, especially with someone who’s switched on, wants to help and with a great car.”
It is understood that Hunter is in the process of importing a vehicle from the United States in order to replace the sold Monaro.
