Mostert on pole, Holdsworth rolls in qualifying

Chaz Mostert handed Prodrive another pole position

Chaz Mostert made it a clean sweep of Barbagallo Armor All Pole Awards for Prodrive, leading Mark Winterbottom to a front-row lockout for Race 9.

The two Pepsi Max Fords again proved the class of the field when it mattered, rocketing to the top of the order with two of the 20 minutes remaining.

Punctuated by two red flag periods, qualifying again came down to a single run on green tyres.

Garth Tander spent time at the top in the dying minutes before ending up third ahead of Jamie Whincup, David Reynolds and Craig Lowndes.

Will Davison, Tim Slade, Shane van Gisbergen and James Moffat completed the top 10.

Moffat had run his tyre set early, subsequently topping the sheets before the late flurry of quicker times.

The first of the red flags had been called after five minutes when Lee Holdsworth rolled at Turn 6.

The Walkinshaw Holden tripped onto its side after spinning into the soft sand.

Holdsworth climbed out of the car unscathed and will take part in the race later this afternoon.

“When you look at the car all that is broken is the mirror, the sand is so soft down there that once I went in it just dug in and eventually went into a slow roll,” said the driver afterward.

“I knew there would be no damage to the car but obviously be very frustrated to not be out there for qualifying and makes our day a lot harder.”

The second stoppage came with five minutes remaining thanks to a mistake from Fabian Coulthard at the same corner.

The Kiwi locked a right-front tyre, sending him sailings cross the sand trap and nudging the tyre wall.

Although Coulthard was able to extract himself from the barriers, the red flags were called almost immediately, ensuring he could take no further part in the session.

The 200km Race 9 is scheduled for 1420 local time.
