NATIONALS: Ojeda breaks through in Formula 4

Jayden Ojeda

CAMS Payce Australian Formula 4 Championship

Jayden Ojeda has become a race winner in CAMS Payce Australian Formula 4 after fighting back from a poor start in Race 1 at Phillip Island’s Shannons Nationals meeting.

Ojeda had secured a maiden Castrol Pole Position but stalled the #31 AGI Sport entry and missed the start, falling to fifth.

He was back up to third by the end of Lap 1, passed Aaron Love (#78 Team BRM) on Lap 3 and Ryan Suhle (#5 AGI Sport) on Lap 4, and was not headed again for the 11 laps which remained.

“My race was pretty eventful,” noted Ojeda.

“I stalled off the line, so then I had to try to get back to reverse, get back to first and then try to take off before lights went out.

“Missed the start a little bit so I fell back a bit, but then I was able to have a good race to come back through.”

Cameron Shields (#73 Team BRM) sat behind Ojeda in third on the grid and was delayed as a result, but gained positions through the race to finish 2.64s behind in second position.

Rounding up the top five were Love, Suhle, and Lachlan Hughes (#15 Team BRM).

Round 2 wraps up with two more races tomorrow at 0940 and 1235 local time/AEST.

Cooper Murray led every lap in Race 1 of Round 3 of Porsche Michelin GT3 Cup Challenge.

Murray took pole and led the field into Doohan Corner for the first time but was tailed by Max Vidau for several laps.

Vidau, however, ran off the road at Southern Loop on Lap 9 and remained stranded there for the rest of the race.

Simon Fallon took a distant second as a result of the incident, with Chelsea Angelo third.

Marcel Zalloua prevailed over Ben Stack in the contest for Pro-Am honours, taking fourth outright.

David Greig won Class B in 11th outright.

There will be two more races tomorrow at 0910 and 1205.

Rio Nugara

Australian GT Trophy Series

Rio Nugara swept Round 3 of the Australian GT Trophy Series with one large win and one which was much harder work.

In Race 1, Nugara emerged with the lead after the compulsory pit stops and went on to win by 6.82s in the #188 EAT Furniture Audi R8 LMS Ultra.

Nick Kelly (#99 Industrie Audi R8 LMS Ultra) and Matt Stoupas (#23 KFC Audi R8 LMS Ultra) filled out the minor placings.

In Race 2, Nugara again led after the pit stops but Kelly and John Morriss (#34 Motorsport Leasing Porsche 911 GT3 R) caught him and applied significant pressure.

Nugara saw off the challenge and pulled away to take the chequered flag 1.74s clear of Kelly and Morriss.

Kelly continues to lead the series, which is next in action with the Australian GT Championship at Supercars’ Red Rooster Sydney SuperNight 300 on August 3-4.

Radical Australia Cup

Yasser Shahin and James Winslow combined to take victory in Race 1 of Radical Australia Cup.

But for the compulsory pit stop cycle, Car #66 led all the way and eventually won by 16.70s.

Nathan Kumar came from the last row of the grid to finish the 50-minute encounter in second position, ahead of Jon Collins/Sue Hughes.

There will be another 50-minute race to complete Round 4 tomorrow.
