The introduction of the CAMS Superlicence system has sparked an avalanche of debate.
The system has been introduced this season to ensure a certain driving standard is met by competitors in the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship.
CAMS elected to grant 16-year-old Alex Rullo a special dispensation to make his Supercars debut at Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport despite the teenager failing to meet the specified criteria to qualify for a Superlicence last week.
A day later the sport’s governing body declined to grant a dispensation to 23-year-old Dunlop Series driver Matt Chahda which blocked him from taking the second seat at LDM.
The decision arrived despite the Albury-based Chahda meeting at least half of the criteria.
Under the new procedure drivers wishing to race in Australia’s premier series must obtain a CAMS Superlicence instead of the International Circuit C Racing Licence requirement from previous years.
To qualify for a Superlicence applicants must be at least 17-years-old and meet CAMS’ points criteria.
Drivers must accrue a minimum of 13 points which is calculated from championship finishes in national categories over a five-year period.
Warburton claims the points system is weighted wrongly with categories such as the CAMS-run Formula 4 Championship carrying far too many points compared to other series.
While many agree a system should be in place, this week’s Pirtek Poll asks, should CAMS review the Superlicence system?
