The Formula 1 entry list takes on a somewhat jumbled look this year following the move to allow drivers choice of their own racing numbers.
The concept, announced by the FIA late last year, has been introduced in order to increase marketing opportunities for drivers and teams.
Drivers have been allowed to select whichever number between #2 and #99 that they wished to carry for the remainder of their F1 careers.
It follows almost two decades of the #1 and #2 numbers being awarded on the previous year’s drivers’ championship results (with #1 to the champion and #2 to his team-mate for the new season), and the remaining numbers sequentially allocated on the corresponding constructors’ standings.
The new system is similar to that seen in MotoGP, where riders, such as Valentino Rossi with his famous #46, take their plate from team to team.
With the 2014 entry list having now been revealed, this week’s Pirtek Poll asks: What do you think of Formula 1’s new number system?
