Four-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton has suggested a move to Mercedes for next season is ‘unlikely’ for Daniel Ricciardo.
Having claimed victory in Monaco with arguably his finest performance, Ricciardo has seen his value rise sharply within the paddock.
Battling a car with no kinetic energy recovery, which equated to a 25 percent loss of power, high brake temperatures, and more, Ricciardo put in a commanding performance to control the race from start to finish.
The Monaco win comes at the perfect time for Ricciardo, who is out of contract at the end of the season and currently considering his future.
Speculation has now reached fever pitch as the 28-year-old is linked with Mercedes, Ferrari, and Red Bull.
Adding his opinion into the mix, Hamilton has suggested the Australian’s future is best spent staying put.
“I would imagine his future is there (with Red Bull),” Hamilton said.
“He is one of the top drivers so I am sure there will be options for him.
“There’s only Ferrari and Mercedes that he could ever consider, but currently here (Mercedes) that’s unlikely. I don’t think that’s going to happen.
“I imagine Kimi’s going to want to continue (with Ferrari). Why not? He’s driving really well this year and he doesn’t seem to be ageing so I’m sure he’ll go for a little bit longer.”
Hamilton did however warn Ricciardo to make sure his contract reflected not only his position in the team, but also afforded him options for the future.
“It’s important in a team that you are valued at what you are worth,” Hamilton said.
“At the moment, he is pretty much the lead driver in that team, so it’s not a bad place to be, but he should definitely have a contract on his table and his options ready.”
Despite the continued speculation, Ricciardo has thus far not announced any decision.
Similarly, Hamilton is also out of contract at the end of the season, though it’s widely expected that his re-signing with Mercedes is little more than a formality.
