Rullo returns to Super2 with MW Motorsport

Alex Rullo

Alex Rullo will return to both MW Motorsport and the Dunlop Super2 Series this year in a Nissan Altima.

Rullo last year became the youngest driver in Virgin Australia Supercars Championship history when he debuted as a 16-year-old with Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport.

Despite an initial two-year agreement, the West Australian exited the team with two events remaining in the season.

He went on to test a British Touring Car and also undertake an evaluation day with MWM, and will line up with the latter in Super2 in 2018.

Rullo enjoyed success with the squad three seasons earlier, becoming the youngest ever winner of a national CAMS circuit racing event on his way to a runner-up finish in the Kumho Tyre V8 Touring Car Series.

“After completing an evaluation day with the team late last year, the car felt really good in comparison to the LDM Commodore,” said Rullo.

“The Nissan is quite different so it will take a bit to get comfortable, but I’m really keen to be working with Matt (White, team owner) and his team again.

“I’ve learnt a lot since working with him in 2015, so hopefully we can continue our race-winning partnership.”

Rullo linked with LDM for the 2016 Super2 Series before making the leap to the Supercars Championship, initially with a provisional Superlicence.

He achieved a best result of 15th, driving with Alex Davison, in the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000.

Despite having no other finish inside the top 20, Rullo believes the experience will hold him in good stead for his 2018 campaign.

“Although last year was tough competing in an outdated car, I feel like it was a real character-building season,” he explained.

“I learned a lot off the VASC drivers and I know what it’s like to compete at their level.

“There’s definitely going to be a high-level of competition in Super2 this year from what I’ve heard. It’ll be tough but hopefully we surprise a few people.”

Rullo, who will test early next week, joins Dean Fiore at MWM, with the identity of a third driver expected to be announced shortly.

LDM has morphed into 23Red Racing with the buy-in of Phil Munday, and will field a single Prodrive-built FGX Falcon for Will Davison.

The 2018 Super2 Series commences at the Adelaide 500 on March 1-4.
