Scott McLaughlin will become the youngest-ever V8 Supercars driver when he debuts for the Stone Brothers Racing team this year in the Fujitsu V8 Series.
At 16 years of age, McLaughlin will surpass Paul Dumbrell as the youngest-ever person to compete in a V8 Supercars race.
The 16-year-old Kiwi told Speedcafe.com.au that it’s a dream come true to be a V8 Supercar driver.
“It’s a great opportunity,” he said.
“I’m extremely excited about it. It’s a big privilege to be involved. V8 Supercars has always been my dream. I’m not exactly in the Main Series yet, but it’s still unbelievable.”
The New Zealander comes into the Fujitsu V8 Series very raw, and is basically coming straight out of karting. He has tested Formula Fords and MINI Challenge cars on a couple of occasions, plus raced a Gemini in Queensland.
“Really, I haven’t done that much. I tested the V8 at Queensland Raceway late last year, but I don’t think Ross and Jimmy would put me in the V8s if they didn’t think I was ready,” he said.
“I’m pretty sure they’re comfortable with me in the car, so I’ve just got to make sure I live up to their expectations.
“I’m working on the car at the moment at the workshop getting ready for the test. I’ve been hopping in and out of it, getting comfortable. I can’t wait.”
McLaughlin will test his Fujitsu Falcon BF at Queensland Raceway on March 2 and 4.
