Perez under the spotlight in F1 silly season

Formula 1’s driver market is in full swing with Sergio Perez now appearing certain to be replaced at McLaren by Kevin Magnussen.

The 21-year-old Dane won the Formula Renault 3.5 Series this season and has reportedly impressed the McLaren outfit in both limited real-world testing and extensive simulator work.

The news has cast the spotlight on the future of Perez, who was signed to McLaren this season after two impressive years at Sauber.

The 2013 campaign has proven a nightmare for McLaren as the team heads for its first year without a single podium finish since 1980.

Perez has largely struggled to make the most of the equipment, scoring just 35 points to date against 60 for team-mate Jenson Button.

Still just 23 years old and with strong potential to raise a budget due to his long-running connections to the Slim family, Perez is likely to be an attractive proposition to several teams.

Early reports have linked Perez with Force India, where both incumbent drivers Paul di Resta and Adrian Sutil are out-of-contract.

The second seat at Lotus looms as the most competitive available ride, but the Enstone-based squad appears likely to either select Nico Hulkenberg or Pastor Maldonado, depending on its budget requirements.

Maldonado and his substantial PVDSA monies were confirmed earlier this week to be leaving Williams thanks to the arrival of Ferrari refugee Felipe Massa.

Sauber is the other mid-field player in the market. The Swiss outfit could have two seats available, pending a final decision on Russian teenager Sergey Sirotkin.

The cash-strapped team announced alongside a Russian investment deal earlier this year that Sirotkin will part of a development program that could see him on the grid as early as 2014.
