Sieders tops Toyota 86 practice at SMP

Dave Sieders

David Sieders

David Sieders has emerged fastest in practice for the  second round of the Toyota 86 Racing Series at Sydney Motorsport Park.

The locally-based driver set the benchmark 1:48.54s lap on his first flying effort in the morning’s 20-minute hit-out, while Cameron Hill topped the second session of the day.

Practice 1 was effectively split in two parts as Haydn Clark necessitated a red flag when he spun and found the gravel at Turn 1.

Hill, who swept the series’ inaugural round at Winton in May, looked set to eclipse Sieders’ time late in the session, but his lap was disrupted by traffic from the 38-car field.

The Illawarra Toyota/Hino-backed driver usurped Tim Brook to go to the top of the timesheets halfway through Practice 2, during which light rain fell throughout.

Dean Canto was the best of the invited drivers with the 12th fastest lap on combined times.

Daniel Rein Ooi provided the lowlight of the day when he found the wall late in Practice 2.

The Singaporean lost the rear of his Raceline Motorsport entry exiting Turn 4 and made light front-end contact with a tyre-protected section of the concrete barrier.

Qualifying will be held tomorrow from 1150 AEST before Race 1 is run over 10 laps at 1525.
