Lewis Hamilton will keep his Italian Grand Prix victory after stewards cleared Mercedes of breaching tyre pressure guidelines.

Mercedes were summoned to the stewards shortly after Hamilton claimed his seventh win of the season to defend claims his left rear tyre was 0.3 PSI below the 19.5 PSI limit set by Pirelli.

Hamilton’s team-mate Nico Rosberg was also judged to have breached the tyre technical regulations after his left rear tyre measured 1.1 PSI under the set target.

Both Mercedes and Ferrari cars had their tyre pressures taken by an FIA delegate on the grid prior to the start of Sunday’s race.

However, after a meeting involving representatives from Mercedes and Pirelli, the stewards ruled that the tyres were within the pressure guidelines when they were fitted.

The tyres registered a lower reading because they had cooled after the tyre blankets were unplugged before they were measured by the FIA.

“Stewards determine that the pressures were at the minimum start pressure recommended by Pirelli when they were fitted to the car,” read a statement from the stewards.

“Tyre warming blankets had been disconnected from their power source as is normal procedures and the tyres were significantly below the maximum permitted tyre blanket temperature at the time of the FIA measurement on the grid and significantly different temperatures from other cars measured on the grid.

“The stewards decide to take no further action.

“Neverthess the stewards recommend the tyre manufacturer and the FIA hold further meetings to provide clear guidance to the teams on measurements.”

A relieved Mercedes boss Toto Woff reiterated the low tyre pressure readings were not the fault of the team.

“We need to talk about procedures in the future but for this particular incident there is no penalty,” said Wolff.

“We were exactly on the minimum pressures when the tyres were put on the car.

“I don’t know where the discrepancy came from but it was not a mistake done by the team to gain an advantage.

“You are always nervous when called to the stewards after such a victory, I am a little bit relieved now.”

As a result of the outcome, the race result stands with Hamilton now leading the championship standings by 53 points from team-mate Rosberg.
