Two-time MotoGP world champion Casey Stoner has been inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame.

The 30-year-old has enjoyed a glittering career on two wheels lifting the MotoGP world title in 2007, riding for Ducati, before repeating the feat aboard a factory Honda in 2011.

Stoner recorded 38 grand prix wins and 69 podium finishes before calling time on his seven year MotoGP career in May 2012.

The Queenslander has continued his relationship with Honda in a test rider capacity.

He made a racing return for the Japanese marque earlier this year at the prestigious Suzuka 8 Hour, which resulted in a heavy crash leaving Stoner to recover from a broken leg and shoulder.

Stoner joins five-time 500cc world champion Mick Doohan and 1987 500cc world champion Wayne Gardner in the Sport Australia Hall of Fame.

Sport Australia Hall of Fame selection committee chairman Rob de Castella AO MBE said Stoner warranted the accolade for being a legend of motorsport on and off the track.

“Casey Stoner is widely regarded as one of the best riders in the history of motorcycling,” de Castella said.

“A two-time championship winner, an icon of international and Australian motorsport, Casey Stoner demonstrated incredible commitment and courage from start to finish, as he embarked on his ultimately fulfilled quest of racing in MotoGP.”

Stoner will be officially inducted at the Sport Australia Hall of Fame 31st Induction and Awards Gala Dinner at Palladium at Crown, Melbourne on October 21.
