Stoner stuns Lorenzo to win US GP

Stoner took another US GP win

Casey Stoner has ridden the race of his life to win the US Grand Prix.

The Australian ran behind Yamaha’s Jorge Lorenzo and team-mate Dani Pedrosa over the opening half of the race – making his move on the Spaniard at the Corkscrew with 15 laps to go.

Having stalked Lorenzo for the following nine laps, Stoner pulled the winning move around the outside of Turn 1 before easing away in the closing stages.

Lorenzo took a comfortable second over Pedrosa, while Ben Spies overcame Andrea Dovizioso with two laps left to score fourth.

Valentino Rossi, Nicky Hayden, Colin Edwards, Hector Barbera and Hiroshi Aoyama rounded out the top 10.

Marco Simoncelli again headed for the showers early after crashing his Honda, while Alvaro Bautista fell from his Suzuki prior to half distance while chasing the factory Ducatis.

Ben Bostrum’s wildcard entry also failed to make the finish – the American pulling out of the race after a number of trips to the gravel trap in order to concentrate on the AMA Superbike support event to be run directly after the Grand Prix.

Pramac Ducati’s Randy de Puniet withdrew from the event on Sunday morning after breaking two bones in his back during qualifying.

The victory extends Stoner’s championship lead over Lorenzo to 20 points.
