Stunning fightback earns Marquez ninth win

Marc Marquez claimed his ninth win of the season in Germany

Marc Marquez claimed his ninth win of the season in Germany

Marc Marquez extended his MotoGP championship lead as he produced yet another masterclass to come from behind to win a rain affected German Grand Prix.

The Honda rider started from the pit-lane along with the majority of the field after a late switch to slick tyres at a rapidly drying Sachsenring circuit.

It proved to be an inspired decision as he fought his way up through the field to claim his ninth consecutive victory of the season.

Team-mate Dani Pedrosa finished second ahead of Yamaha’s Jorge Lorenzo.

Chaos ensued just minutes before the race as the heavens opened forcing officials to declare a wet race.

This prompted the majority of the grid to plump for a wet setup with Stefan Bradl the only rider to elect for slick tyres.

Once the riders completed their citing lap, the field entered the pits to change to a dry weather set up after finding conditions were sufficiently dry on most parts of the circuit.

As a result, just five riders started from the grid with the rest of the field joining the race from the pit-lane.

This gave local rider Bradl the lead at the start ahead of Michel Laverty and Danilo Petrucci, while the rest of the field were left to catch the breakaway group.

Reigning world champion Marquez soon began to scythe his way through the field as he headed the starters from the pit-lane in 10th position. He was followed by Pedrosa and Valentino Rossi.

After just six laps Marquez found himself in second in hot pursuit of Bradl with the German losing chunks of his lead to the Spaniard behind. The LCR Honda man appeared to be struggling with a bike set up for wet conditions but on slick tyres.

At the end of lap seven Marquez took the lead by diving up the inside of Bradl at the final corner with Pedrosa following through shortly after.

Bradl then slipped right down the order over the next laps.

Despite a brief challenge from Pedrosa, Marquez soon opened up a healthy lead while Rossi lost third to his charging Yamaha team-mate Lorenzo.

Andrea Iannone moved into fifth ahead of Aleix Espargaro and Ducati’s Andrea Dovizioso.

At the front Pedrosa continued to push Marquez but there was no stopping the championship leader as he took the chequered flag from his team-mate.

Lorenzo comfortably came home in third ahead of Iannone, Aleix Espargaro.

Monster Yamaha’s Pol Espargaro was seventh in front on Ducati’s Andrea Dovizioso.

Gresini Honda’s Alvaro Bautista and Britain’s Cal Crutchlow rounded out the top 10.

Australia’s Broc Parkes finished in 21st position for Paul Bird Motorsport.

Marquez leads the standings by 77 points from Pedrosa ahead of MotoGP’s visit to Indianapolis on August 10.
