Victories for Rhys McNally and Kris Walton ensured the 2013 V8 Utes title will be decided in the final races after a busy day of support race action at Sydney Olympic Park.
Walton’s comfortable win in race one followed by McNally’s triumph in race two has left Ryal Harris and Nathan Pretty to battle it out for the championship in Sunday’s final race.
Harris is in the box seat to secure the title as he holds a 35-point lead over Pretty and just needs to finish the race to clinch the championship.
However, if he fails to finish and Pretty secures a victory, he will be declared champion.
Race one belonged to Walton as he grabbed the lead by out dragging polesitter David Seiders on the run down to the final corner.
Kim Jane also slipped past Seiders to grab second.
As the race progressed, Seiders recovered to move back into second and tried to haul in leader Walton.
Pretty also joined the fray in third but the pair were unable to stop Walton from taking the chequered flag.
Harris came home in sixth to aid his title hopes.
McNally produced an impressive lights-to-flag drive to take the honours in race two as he led home Gary Baxter and Walton.
Once again Harris kept his points tally ticking over by finishing fourth.
The Aussie Racing Cars championship remains wide open after Peter Carr recorded a double victory while Nathan Townsend closed the gap in the title race.
In race one, Townsend made a strong getaway from pole and led into the first corner.
But, he was hotly pursued by Carr and by the end of the opening lap he slipped through and into the lead.
A four car group including Kyle Clews and Trent Young quickly moved away from the 39-car field at the front.
Meanwhile championship leader Maurice Masini was fighting to break into the top six.
After losing the lead, Townsend fell into the clutches of Young and Clews with the pair both finding a way through.
Clews‘ hopes of a podium were soon dashed when he crashed into retirement on the following lap.
Carr made no mistakes at front and took the win with Townsend recovering to second with a last ditch move on Young. Travis Edwards came home in fourth with Masini in fifth.
The race one winner made light work of the second encounter of the weekend as he stormed to a comfortable victory from Edwards and Young.
Carr led from the start but there was plenty of action behind as Edwards, Young and Townsend were embroiled in a battle for the podium places.
Once again Carr looked in control at the front and he took the chequered flag from Edwards and Young.
Townsend finished fourth ahead of Masini to further cut the lead in the championship.
Queenslander Liam Sager produced a faultless drive to record a lights-to-flag victory in the first race of the final Australian Formula Ford Championship meeting.
Sager made the most of his pole position and immediately leapt into a healthy lead. Newly crowned champion Anton De Pasquale held second but came under increasing pressure from Sam Power.
While Sager ran away at the front, the pressure took its toll on De Pasquale as Power surged into second.
But there was no stopping Sager as he took the spoils.
De Pasquale stayed on Power’s tail throughout the race and placed a move to grab the position back on the final corner.
Macauley Jones battled his way to finish fourth.
