Sykes secures commanding Aragon double

World Superbike champion Tom Sykes has surged to the top of the championship standings after recording a double win at Spain’s Motorland Aragon circuit.

The British rider led team-mate Loris Baz home in both races to record an impressive Kawasaki Racing double 1-2 finish.

Sykes made no mistakes in race one as he powered into a healthy lead from pole with Baz  and Ducati’s Davide Giugliano in hot pursuit. The pair were the only two riders able to sustain the Englishman’s relentless pace at the front.

In the end, there was nothing Baz or Giugliano could do to halt Sykes as the focus shifted to the battle for second.

The duo swapped positions before Giugliano dropped back into third.

The final laps saw Giugliano involved in scrap for third with Pata Honda’s Jonathan Rea which resulted in contact.

The Italian came off worse and rejoined the race in eighth where he remained at the flag, while Rea grabbed the final spot on the podium.

Ducati’s Chaz Davies finished fourth ahead of the Suzuki of Eugene Laverty and Aprilia’s Sylvain Guintoli.

Sykes faced much more of a challenge in race two with Baz and Aprilia’s Marco Melandri pushing him all the way to the chequered flag.

The trio swapped places on several occasions during the final three laps, before Melandri ran wide at the final hairpin allowing Sykes and Baz through to claim a second 1-2 finish.

Guintoli came home in fourth ahead of Rea and Laverty.

Sykes holds a four point lead at the top of the standings ahead of the championship‘s third round at the legendary Assen circuit on April 27.
