NASCAR star Tony Stewart has been hospitalised with a back injury following an all-terrain vehicle accident.
According to a Stewart-Haas Racing team statement, the three-time champion “is awake and alert, and able to move all extremities”.
The team says it will provide a further update on Thursday when more information on Stewart’s condition is known.
The accident comes on the eve of Stewart’s final Sprint Cup season, which is due to start with the non-points scoring Sprint Unlimited at Daytona on February 13.
Stewart’s has missed races in two of the last three seasons due to accidents.
A broken right leg from a Sprintcar crash interrupted his campaign in 2013, while involvement in another dirt track accident that claimed the life of Kevin Ward Jr saw him on the sidelines for multiple races a year later.
