Radical Australia will introduce the V8-powered SR8 RX model into its national one-make series next season as the category eyes a move towards marquee events.

The Radical Australia Cup is currently in its second season as a national class, with a fleet of 1.5 litre, four-cylinder, SR3 models doing battle over a seven round series.

The SR8 RX completed a test run at Sydney Motorsport Park at the weekend, where it lapped almost five-seconds faster than the current Radical Cup lap record in the hands of Radical Australia’s development driver Garth Walden.

According to Radical Australia’s Greg Smith, the introduction of the 2.7 litre V8 powered cars is just a part of the category’s expansionary plans.

Discussions are currently underway that could see the class supporting next year’s Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix at Albert Park, as well as making its first appearance at Bathurst.

“The SR8 RX Competition Car represents a fairly major step forward for Radical in Australia, but the time is right to continue to grow the brand and expand the series,” said Smith.

“We are in the process of investigating further opportunities to give Radical customers opportunities to race at new or high profile events.

“As a category we now average more than 20 cars per round, which makes us a safe bet to put on a great show wherever we race.

“Bringing the SR8 RX Competition to Albert Park and potentially to Bathurst would be a great way to welcome the car to Australia”.

Glyn Edis currently leads the 2012 Radical Australia Cup by five points over Neale Muston after four rounds.

The series continues with the Shannons Nationals presented by Hi-Tec Oils at Queensland Raceway on August 10-12.
