Sebastian Vettel has been dropped from second to fifth in the German Grand Prix results after the Red Bull star was handed a 20 second post-race penalty.
The FIA stewards deemed that Vettel had gained an advantage by using the tarmac exit run-off to complete an outside pass on Jenson Button for second place on the penultimate lap.
The revised result sees Button elevated to second behind race winner Alonso, with Kimi Raikkonen and Kamui Kobayashi moving to third and fourth respectively.
Vettel argued that he had used the run-off to avoid a potential collision with his rival.
“It was a difficult one,” said Vettel of the move immediately after the race.
“I wasn’t sure whether he was still on the inside or not and obviously the last thing you want to do is make contact.
“At the angle he’s side by side but not really and I can’t see him from the inside of the car, so I tried to give enough room and then went wide and obviously we’re all struggling with our tyres (at that point of the race), Jenson in particular, and that’s how I was able to get close and pass him.”
