Maverick Viñales has set the fastest time on Day 1 of the MotoGP post-season test at Valencia on a 2016-spec Yamaha.
Viñales (Movistar Yamaha) was fastest from Johann Zarco (Tech 3 Yamaha) and Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda), with Jack Miller fifth in his first outing with Pramac Ducati.
Viñales set his benchmark time of 1:30.189s on a 2016 chassis in the final hour, though it is believed that the Spaniard was using a development 2018 engine.
Zarco had been fastest prior to that point with his fastest lap coming on a 2017-spec Yamaha M1, and he was ultimately exactly two tenths adrift of Viñales.
Marquez, who won a fourth premier class world championship and sixth in total at the Circuit Ricardo Tormo two days prior, was 0.112s further back, having spent the majority of the day atop the timesheets.
Honda brought prototype 2018 chassis and engine for Marquez, his team-mate Dani Pedrosa, and LCR’s Cal Crutchlow, but Marquez’s fastest lap came on his 2017 bike.
Valentino Rossi was fourth-fastest and unhurt despite a big crash at Turn 10 just before the two-hour mark.
Both he and Viñales tried out a bold new aerofairing on their factory Yamahas early in the day.
Miller was the fastest Ducati rider in fifth position, edging out factory riders Andrea Dovizioso in seventh and Jorge Lorenzo in eighth.
Lorenzo, Dovizioso, and Miller’s Pramac team-mate Danilo Petrucci, who was 14th-fastest, all tested an evolution of the 2017 bike with testing of the Desmosedici GP18 not due until next year.
Aleix Espargaro (Gresini Aprilia) was sixth-fastest, Pol Espargaro was the first of the Red Bull KTMs in ninth, and Crutchlow rounded out the top 10, just ahead of Pedrosa.
Tito Rabat completed his first day with Avintia Ducati in 13th, as Aprilia debutant Scott Redding was 15th.
LCR Honda’s Takaaki Nakagami was the top rookie rider in 17th, 2.5s off the pace.
Reigning Moto2 champion Franco Morbidelli (Marc VDS Honda) was just four hundredths of a second slower in 18th.
The order was completed by Takumi Takahashi, who replaced the injured Tom Luthi at Marc VDS Honda, and Avintia Ducati’s Xavier Simeon.
Suzuki was forced to skip the day as both Andrea Iannone and Alex Rins, along with other team members, were diagnosed with minor viral infection.
Alvaro Bautista also failed to set a time due to a violent crash at Turn 1, caused by a suspected gearbox failure in his Aspar Ducati bike.
The Spaniard went to the hospital for checks, but he was cleared of any fractures.
That’s not how you want to start testing 😖
Nasty highside for @19Bautista down at turn one, but luckily #RiderOK pic.twitter.com/EHtQgrPDHm
