Whincup to consider Triple Eight co-drive

A decision has not yet been made as to whether Jamie Whincup will co-drive for Red Bull Ampol Racing in 2022.

Whincup will step away from full-time Supercars competition at the end of 2021 to take on the role of team principal and managing director at Triple Eight Race Engineering.

In a question-and-answer issued by the team following the announcement, it was said Whincup will weigh up whether he continues to race in a limited capacity.

“Jamie will evaluate co-driving in 2022 with Red Bull Ampol Racing,” it read.

Incumbent co-driver Craig Lowndes retired from full-time competition at the end of 2018, his endurance role announced simultaneously.

Garth Tander was sidelined in 2019 after Garry Rogers Motorsport opted to sign Richie Stanaway.

Tander, who won the Supercars Championship in 2007, was announced soon after to partner Shane van Gisbergen at Triple Eight, the pair winning the Bathurst 1000 last year.

As yet, Triple Eight hasn’t indicated who might replace Whincup at the team, but has noted it has Super2 Series drivers Broc Feeney and Angelo Mouzouris in its ranks.
