Jamie Whincup says his impending Supercars retirement may afford him the chance to contest major international events.

The seven-time champion has spent the lion’s share of his career behind the wheel of V8-powered touring cars.

Only in the latter stages of his career has he expanded into sports car racing, notably winning the Bathurst 12 Hour on debut with Craig Lowndes and Toni Vilander for Maranello Motorsport.

After nearly two decades of Supercars competition, Whincup said he’s eyeing international opportunities after he retires from competing full-time at season’s end.

“I’ve a little bit deprived myself of other forms of motorsport as well,” said Whincup.

“I know Tony [Quinn] enjoys his GT racing, which I’ve dipped my toe into as well, but there’s also other races around the world as well that I would like to be able to compete in while I’m still sharp and motorsport or driving fit, ready to go.

“I’m just going to wait and see, but I’ll come back to you more on that probably in the next six months.”

Asked if there were any specific events he’d like to contest, Whincup said he wasn’t sure where he might race.

“There’s nothing that massively presents itself,” said Whincup.

“But as you know there’s some marquee events around the world that every driver wants to compete in. One of those may become appealing but we’ll just have to wait and see.

“I don’t want to commit myself to anything like that. There’s plenty on my plate for 2021-22. That’s my absolute main focus. That’s where the priority is.”

Whincup’s team-mate Shane van Gisbergen has been the most prolific Supercars driver to race overseas in recent years.

The Kiwi has contested the 24 Hours of Spa, 24 Hours of Daytona, 12 hours of Sebring, Sepang 12 Hours, and Six Hours of Watkins Glen.
