Robert Wickens has been transferred to an Indianapolis hospital where he will have further surgery on his ‘lower extremities’.

Wickens was transferred to Lehigh Valley Hospital – Cedar Crest from the Pocono Raceway medical centre shortly after his horror crash during the IndyCar race on Sunday August 19, where he remained until Thursday (August 30, local time).

Schmidt Peterson Motorsports has advised that he has now been moved to IU Health Methodist Hospital in his home city of Indianapolis.

“Schmidt Peterson Motorsports driver Robert Wickens was transferred to IU Health Methodist Hospital on Thursday, Aug. 30 to continue treatment in his home of Indianapolis,” read a statement from the team.

“He will soon undergo further surgery on his lower extremities.

“Wickens had been in the care of Lehigh Valley Hospital – Cedar Crest since his Aug. 19 incident during the INDYCAR event at Pocono Raceway.

“The Wickens family and SPM organization want to thank the surgeons, nursing team and the staff at the LVHN facility for their care of Robert the last 12 days.”

The Canadian suffered a spinal injury and broke his right arm and both legs in the crash.

He has already had titanium rods inserted in his spine and surgery for the arm and lower extremities.

Last weekend, SPM advised that he was breathing independently and speaking to his family for the first time, but there have been no further updates regarding the severity of his spinal cord injury.

Carlos Munoz will drive the team’s #6 Honda entry for the remainder of the season, after James Hinchcliffe was its sole starter for the Gateway Motorsports Park race a week ago.

Meanwhile, Sebastien Bourdais (#18 DCR w/ Vasser-Sullivan Honda) set the fastest lap in Practice 1 for this weekend’s Grand Prix of Portland.
