Suzuki factory rider Aleix Espargaro will undergo surgery after injuring his thumb at the French Grand Prix last week.
The 25-year-old Spaniard has been diagnosed with a ruptured ligament in his thumb incurred from a high speed accident in practice prior to last Sunday’s fifth round of the world championship at Le Mans.
Despite the injury, Espargaro took the start at Le Mans on Sunday before retiring from the race with a clutch problem.
MotoGP physician Dr Mir confirmed Espargaro will undergo surgery today with the rider expected to stay overnight at Clinica Dexeus in Barcelona.
“Aleix suffered a rupture in the ulnar collateral ligament of the metacarpophalangeal joint of the right thumb, confirmed by ultrasound and x-rays,” said Mir.
“This injury causes joint instability and therefore a surgical repair is necessary.”
Espargaro is hopeful the injury will not rule him out of the Italian Grand Prix at Mugello on May 31.
