Matthew Brabham has secured a surprise drive in the Australian Production Car Series finale at Sydney Motorsport Park this weekend.
The 22-year-old will run in a Class B DPO BMW 335i in the last round of the series on the packed Shannons Nationals program.
The surprise twist in American-based Brabham’s campaign comes as the Stadium Super Trucks Series regular remained in Australia after the recent Castrol GC600 meeting on an extended stay.
In what has been a signature year for the grandson of the late triple world F1 champion Sir Jack Brabham, the talented racer is looking forward to what will be another new experience in his career.
Brabham had his maiden start in the Indianapolis 500 in May when he finished 22nd in the Pirtek Team Murray Chevrolet.
“The Aussie Production Car series has always looked like a lot of fun,” Brabham said.
“It’s been great to see so many of my buddies I grew up racing karts with in Australia move up through the ranks and become successful in Motorsports.
“I’ve been taking more interest in the series since Aaron Seton, Chaz (Mostert) and Nathan (Morcom) have all done some races.
“It seems like they have all enjoyed great racing in fun cars and awesome tracks, which makes me want to join in on the action and have some fun myself.
“I will drive anything and I enjoy every aspect of motor racing – this is a fantastic opportunity for me to jump into a car and have another race while I’m back in Australia.”
Brabham will share the car with Leigh Burges, who started racing go karts at the age of 12.
“I believe it will be a great combination. One of my first ever real experiences with a car was at SMP in a BMW when I was very young and tagging along on some of dad’s (Geoff) BMW Driver Training days,” he recalled.
Brabham will be part of a field of more than 60 drivers lining up for the Australian Production Cars final event for the season.
