Coulthard and Whincup share Saturday pole positions

The Lockwood Racing crew celebrate pole for Race 13

The Lockwood Racing crew celebrate pole for Race 13

Fabian Coulthard and Jamie Whincup will start from pole position in Races 13 and 14 respectively following back-to-back morning qualifying sessions at the Circuit of the Americas.

The Race 13 pole man changed four times in the final 60 seconds of the first 15 minute hit-out.

Whincup and team-mate Craig Lowndes traded the top spot back and forth before a 1:32.59s effort from Coulthard as the chequered flag fell proved the final marker.

Whincup will start second in Race 13 while Lowndes and an outstanding David Wall complete the second row.

Will Davison, Jonathon Webb, Mark Winterbottom, Garth Tander and Shane van Gisbergen filled fifth through ninth, with Rick Kelly scoring a first top 10 starting spot for a Nissan Altima with 10th.

The second session was all about Whincup, who moved to the top by a full second just prior to the halfway mark.

Lowndes drew within 0.26s of his stable-mate in the closing stages before Whincup enjoyed the luxury of being able to abandon his last lap knowing that pole was secured.

Coulthard sat just 25th in the order before jumping to third with 30 seconds remaining.

Shane van Gisbergen, Jonathon Webb, Rick Kelly, Will Davison, Alexandre Premat, Scott McLaughlin and James Moffat round out the Race 14 top 10.

It was a tough morning for Erebus Motorsport, with 22nd in the Race 13 session for Maro Engel the squad’s best starting position.

A fumbled set-up change kept Tim Slade from running any laps in the second hit-out. The HHA Mercedes had been just 26th in the earlier session.

Regular front-runner Jason Bright was arguably the biggest disappointment of the morning, however, managing just 21st and 18th for the two races.
