Dick Johnson set to get back behind the wheel

Dick Johnson will return to the wheel of a race car

Queensland legend Dick Johnson will pull on the helmet once more, offering fans one last chance to ride alongside the five-time Australian Touring Car champion

Johnson will take paying customers for hot laps of the Norwell, Queensland driver training circuit, aboard the V8 Superschool race cars.

The racing icon, 67, says that it is likely to be the last time that he conducts professional passenger rides.

The rides will cost fans $500 and will be held on December 10.

“I reckon it might be the last time I do something like this,” Johnson told Speedcafe.com.

“The whole thing will be a good experience. It’s not just the ride, there’s a lot of other things to go with it.

“I think it will be a bit of fun. I’ve kept my eye in a bit over the past few years, driving those old cars at the Gold Coast. Last year I ran Targa and this year I did the first day in a Corvette.

“Some hot laps around Norwell will be a great way to not only treat some fans, but for me to blow off some steam!”

The passenger rides will be on sale tomorrow at Dick Johnson Racing’s Family Fun Day, to be held at the team’s workshop in Stapylton.

You can also book your spot alongside Johnson by contacting Dick Johnson Racing.

Johnson drove one of his team’s Falcon V8 Supercars a number of years ago, and he says that he’d love to do that again, if time permits.

“I had one go in a V8 Supercar a few years back, and I’d like to have a go again,” he said.

“Time doesn’t allow you to do that too often, but I might try and squeeze that in one day before I’m able to do it.”

Johnson is a five-time Australian Touring Car champion and has won the Bathurst 1000 three-times.

He retired from full-time racing competition in 1999 and only made one return to V8 Supercars, replacing endurance driver Jason Bright who was unavailable for the Queensland 500 in 2000.

Dick Johnson’s Bathurst ‘rock’  incident to be solved at The 2012 PIRTEK Legends Dinner Presented by Speedcafe.com

The missing link in one of the most widely documented moments in Australian sporting history has been solved and will be unveiled publicly for the first time at the annual Pirtek Legends Dinner, presented by Speedcafe.com on Friday, October 19
