Paul Dumbrell sets cracking pace in final Dunlop Series practice

Series leader Paul Dumbrell has finished the final practice session for the MedicOne 250km Dunlop Series race on top.

The Eggleston Motorsport driver dominated the session from the outset to lead the way ahead of qualifying to determine the grid for Saturday’s 41-lap race.

Dumbrell headed the times from the opening exchanges setting a 2:08.11s lap but he progressively lowered that time, eventually finishing with a 2:07.10s best.

Cameron Waters (Team ENZED FPR) made a late charge in the 40 minute session to claim second fastest in 2:07.16s, the only other driver to eclipse the 2:08s mark.

Garry Jacobson (Eggleston Commodore) set a storming lap late in the session to leap into third best with a 2:08.01s effort.

Ash Walsh (Infants Friend Ford), second in the points standings behind Dumbrell, was second quickest early on but was eventually bumped back to fourth best.

Andrew Jones was fifth fastest ahead of Chris Pither and Ant Pedersen.

Andre Heimgartner, who had occupied the second best time for the opening half of the session, dropped down to eighth ahead of  Todd Hazelwood and Aaren Russell.

Marcus Zukanovic (Action Racing Ford) had a wild ride down Conrod Straight, grazing the wall and destroying some foam signage.

Zukanovic was lucky to escape a heavy impact in the Falcon before ending the session 26th fastest.

“”You forget how fast you’re really going down Conrad there. That’s a good one hey,” Zukanovic remarked.

The 30 minute qualifying session starts at 1555 local time.
