Australian GT driver Geoff Emery is continuing his recovery from a fractured vertebra in Melbourne following a successful transfer from Royal Perth Hospital.
The experienced Victorian driver has been transferred to the Knox Private Hospital in Melbourne after sustaining the back injury in a nasty Australian GT crash at Barbagallo Raceway earlier this month.
Emery secured a Medivac flight from Western Australia to Victoria which was organised by close friend and fellow driver Tony Bates.
The former Dunlop Series driver has been fitted with a back brace which he will wear for three months, although he is now mobile and undergoing physiotherapy.
A procedure to remove screws from his back which have been fitted to help heal the broken bone is planned in six months time.
“It’s great to be back in Melbourne,” Emery told Speedcafe.com.
“(V8 Supercars medical delegate) Dr Carl Le has been great and has got me back to his hospital where they have gone through everything with me
“I was really struggling there for a while. Before the operation it was very painful but the biggest issue at the moment is I can’t sit down for more than 15 minutes as it is the lower vertebra that I have broken.
“I’m undergoing physio now and I’m up and about which is really good.
“All the support I have had has been enormous. The whole motorsport community has been messaging me which is fantastic.”
Aiming to return to racing next year, Emery is keen to attend this weekend’s Australian GT meeting to watch his #1 car from the sidelines.
The car will be shared by Bates and factory Audi driver Miguel Molina.
