Erebus Motorsport is readying itself for a sizeable repair job on Mark Griffith’s Mercedes AMG GT3 to ensure it is ready for next month’s Australian GT round at Townsville.
The squad were forced to withdraw the car from last weekend’s Australian GT sprint races and the opening round of the Australian Endurance Championship at Phillip Island following a heavy crash in qualifying.
Griffith suffered a heavy hit with the barriers at the Hayshed following side-to-side contact with another competitor in qualifying.
The Queenslander escaped the incident without injury but huge damage to the front of the car ruled it out of the meeting.
Erebus general manager Barry Ryan says the team will endeavour to repair it in time for the next Australian GT round (July 8-10) but admitted it could require a re-shell.
This is the second time the AMG GT3 has required a thorough repair following a crash at the Australian Grand Prix meeting in March.
“We are still assessing that at the moment. It is pretty major it is worse than the Grand Prix one (crash),” Ryan told Speedcafe.com.
“It was just an unfortunate accident and there is a lot of damage.
“We will pull it to pieces now and see if it is going to be a re-shell.
“We don’t know the car as well as the SLS, but there is a possibility that we could get it repaired.
“Some of it will be based around supply and demand (of parts) from AMG. If they haven’t got a chassis we may have to keep it.
“We will work with AMG and hopefully we can get it done before Townsville.”
Erebus has its SLS AMG GT3s at its disposal if the fix is unable to be completed in time for the Castrol Edge Townsville 400.
Griffith and co-driver Ryal Harris struck a deal to pilot one of the cars as a replacement for the AMG GT3 at Phillip Island last weekend, which resulted in an eighth place finish.
