Formula 2 will join Formula 1 in introducing the halo when its new car comes online next year.

F2 revealed its new-specification car, which will be known as F2 2018 and run in the championship from next year to 2020, at Monza.

The car replaces the model introduced back in 2011.

In a change mirroring recent changes to F1, F2 2018 will run with a 3.4L turbo-charged Mecachrome V6 engine, replacing the 4.0L naturally-aspirated V8 in the current car.

The new engine will produce up to 620hp at 8750rpm and up to 600 Nm of torque.

In addition to the halo, other safety updates include changes to the Virtual Safety Car system, Drag Reduction System, and electronics.

The car will be longer than its predecessor (length 5224mm versus 5065mm; wheelbase 3135mm versus 3120mm) and taller (1097mm versus 1072mm, including roll hoop), but width remains the same (1900mm).

“Finally, and most importantly, the F2 2018 matches the very latest F1 safety standards: we have a strong track record on safety, and this was a principle focus during the design process.

“I believe that the F2 2018 is the right car for the next stage of our championship, while also providing a worthy race car for the final step of the motorsport ladder for our drivers hoping to achieve their ultimate ambition: a race seat in F1.”
